Seasonal

Flowers By Month

There is usually something blooming in the garden, even in winter!

January

January is usually cold and wet, at least as cold as zone 8 can get. Iris unguicularis may be blooming if it isn’t too cold. The reticulata irises are beginning (Eye Catcher is the name of the blue and white one).

February

February can still be cold, but more things are starting to bloom.

March

With spring comes more flowers. Crocus, early species tulips, some daffodils, and flowering shrubs all start making their appearances.

April

More tulips and more daffodils. Rhododendrons are coming along and the dwarf bearded and arilbred irises are beginning to bloom.

May

Iris season. Really the peak bloom for most of them. Tall Bearded iris, miniature tall beardeds, arilbreds, dwarfs, siberians, and pacific coast irises are all showing off.

June

The tall bearded irises finish blooming early in the month, but the Japanese irises are just beginning. Roses, daylilies and more keep things interesting.

July

The Japanese and Pseudata irises start the month, and some summer blooming iris species finish it. Add in some gladiolus, dahlias, and roses. Also lots of daylilies blooming.

August

Daylilies, gladiolus, and dahlias. Iris x norissii aka Candy Lily) adds to the late summer color.

September

Dahlias, asters, and roses lead into fall, and there are still interesting things around the garden.

October

Fall mums, cyclamen, and hardy fuchsias keep adding color as the seasons change.

November

Not much blooms in November. Some flowers may still be blooming if we don’t have any frost.

December

Iris unguicularis usually starts blooming by December, and can keep going into spring. Otherwise, its mostly foliage and succulents, and cold wet weather.
